A Proud History

Oxley Park Golf Club was officially established in 1912, the result of an ambitious vision shared by a group of local entrepreneurs. At the heart of this group was the then owner of the estate, Judge Henry Staveley Hill K.C., M.P., whose leadership and connections helped turn the idea into reality. Recognising the importance of creating a course that would attract golfers for generations, they enlisted the expertise of Harry Shapland Colt — already earning a reputation as one of the greatest golf course architects of his era.

Colt’s influence on the world of golf cannot be overstated. Over his career, he designed and remodelled more than 300 courses worldwide, with many now ranked among the finest in the game. His portfolio included the prestigious New and Eden courses at St Andrews, the championship course at Muirfield, and the renowned Sunningdale layouts. Bringing his trademark attention to strategy, scenery, and playability, Colt laid out Oxley Park’s original eighteen holes to blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. His work created a course that challenged players of all abilities and ensured its appeal would endure for over a century.

The story of Oxley Park is also closely tied to the life of Judge Henry Staveley Hill. Educated at Westminster School and St John’s College, Oxford, Henry enjoyed a distinguished career in law and public service. He served as Recorder of Banbury from 1903 to 1922 and as Member of Parliament for Kingswinford between 1905 and 1918. In 1901, he married Eileen de Grey Darcy, and the couple lived at New Oxley House before moving to the grand Oxley Manor following the death of Henry’s father, Alexander.

During the Great War, Henry answered the call to serve, taking command as Lieutenant Colonel of the 2/1 Staffordshire Yeomanry from 1916 to 1917. After the war, in 1920, the Staveley Hill family left Oxley, and the manor house was eventually demolished in 1929. Henry continued to contribute to public life as a County Court Judge from 1922 to 1928, before passing away on 25 March 1946 at his home “Oxley” in Evesham. Eileen lived for more than two decades after his death, passing away on 12 December 1968. Both are laid to rest together in the family grave at Bushbury, Wolverhampton.

From its inception, Oxley Park Golf Club has carried forward this rich legacy — a course born from vision, crafted by one of golf’s greatest designers, and rooted in a fascinating local history.

Oxley Park Golf Club - Today

The course, which proudly celebrated its centenary in 2013, continues to stand as a lasting tribute to Harry Shapland Colt’s masterful vision and skill. Every fairway, green, and hazard reflects the careful planning and craftsmanship of one of the world’s most celebrated golf course architects. Designed to test players of all abilities, the layout is as enjoyable today as it was over a century ago.

Played in two distinctive loops, the course offers variety, strategy, and a touch of drama. The first loop concludes at the eighth hole — a challenging par four stretching 443 yards, where accuracy and course management are key. The second loop leads players back towards the clubhouse, finishing on the eighteenth hole, a demanding closing challenge with a stroke index of 2, ensuring your final shot is as memorable as your first.
